About me
I've been painting for basically my whole life. Throughout high school, I imagined I would be a fine art painter when I graduated. My life took a different route, however.
I actually did attend CCS, the Center for Creative Studies. I attended as a fine arts major for a very brief time, but found that there was no way I could pay for school and work to support myself full-time. Basically, it was just too expensive. My love of painting never faded, and I continued to paint off and on as a hobby. I even did a couple of small mixed media shows in the mid-90's.
In the future, I hope to continue to paint, do exhibitions, and use my art to help draw attention to dog-related issues. I prefer to think of much of my art as “political” even though I do paintings of dogs. My goal is to make people see dogs in a new light, from a different perspective. I want to capture and share the soul and love I see in them, and in doing so, to help affect change in the way society views animals. If the public sees my art and even one person decides to go out and try to do something to help end puppymills, or volunteers for rescue, or better yet, adopts a rescued dog, I will have succeeded.
Artists Statement:
I have always been an artist. I speak through images,
painted or photographed. I realized recently that I could do more with my
art than just paint pretty pictures, or take photographs that look good in
offices. I could use my ability to tell a story, tell the truth, and
educate the public about our best friends: dogs.
I chose to work in oil paints exclusively and to
specifically do portraiture because I believe dogs need to be
“elevated” that way artistically. I use mediums and techniques of the
old masters to immortalize our pets and companions the way I think they
deserve to be. I’ve always
admired the portraiture of Vermeer, Titian, and Rembrandt.
Frida Kahlo and Chuck Close are also inspirations. I want to
represent dogs the way these great artists have represented people in
their works. Throughout history, we’ve been able to admire the beauty in
humans through the works of the old masters, but I believe now it’s time
to give our pets that honor.
I hope
to show what I see in our pet's eyes: the unconditional love, trust,
purity and honesty of their souls, and above all the friendship and
faithfulness they have always shown to us, regardless of how many of their
kind have been mistreated by us.
See
the world through their eyes, and then because you have the power they do
not- Change it.
